So first, a bit of history on this day! Pancake day, also known as ‘Shrove Tuesday’ is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday!
Lent is the 40 days leading up to Easter and is now usually used as a way to give up on certain indulgences such as chocolate, sweets and fizzy drinks for 40 days. This year I’m hoping to give up dairy products!
And, here; a quick and easy recipe for you:
- 125g plain flour
- Pinch of salt
- 1 egg
- 300ml milk and water mixed
So first, mix the flour, salt and egg and then mix in the milk and water mixture.
Next, pour some oil in to a frying pan over a medium heat and cover the bottom and sides with it, making sure you drain off any surplus. When it’s hot, pour in some of the batter, just enough to cover the bottom of the pan. Cook the pancake until it’s golden brown on its underbelly before turning or tossing it to the other side to cook. It usually takes about four minutes for each side, but make sure you keep an eye on it.
If your first one doesn’t go to plan, don’t worry, I don’t know many people who get a pancake right on their first try!
You can eat them plain, add some sugar, lemon, chocolate, fruit or ice cream, it’s completely up to you!
